Kingman, Arizona

Monday, December 30

3:30 P.M.

On Interstate 40, just outside Kingman, Arizona, a gleaming Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud sped along the highway like a landlocked meteor. Nick Bell was behind the wheel, guiding the magnificent car with the ease and confidence of a man who had traveled more than twice that fast without a vehicle. Phil Spiller was in the passenger seat next to him. Janis had the back seat all to herself. She was concentrating intently on two books she had purchased in Lake Havasu City earlier that day. One was a medical reference book for the home; the other was a book entitled The Golden Gate Bridge and Its Strange Suicide Mystique, written by a Dr. Aaron Strick.

Overhead, a small jet aircraft passed them, coming in low and heading for the Kingman airport. “That’s probably our charter jet now,” said Spiller. “In about ninety minutes we should be in San Francisco.”

“How many people did the advance man say would be at the San Francisco airport?” Nick asked.

“Probably around ten thousand. When I talked to him at noon, he said they were already starting to arrive.”

“I hope you got us plenty of security,” Nick said.

“Everything’s taken care of, Nick,” the little manager assured him. “One hundred of the best private uniformed policemen in San Francisco started working for us thirty minutes ago.” Spiller took a bay-area map from his inside coat pocket. “After we land, we’ll have a motorcade up the Bayshore Freeway to the Embarcadero. Live World of Sports has got the whole top floor of the Embarcadero Hotel for us and their crews.”

“I suppose that prick Castle will be there too,” Nick said with a slight sullenness.

“Every minute,” Spiller replied.

“Nicky,” said Janis from the back seat, “listen to what this book says about the spleen. It is a large, pulpy organ on the left side of the abdomen that is the main organ for the destruction of red blood cells and the maintenance of correct blood volume. When it is damaged or broken in an accident, it can result in severe internal hemorrhaging.” She closed the book and looked at his eyes in the rearview mirror. “I knew it was something serious, or you wouldn’t have been lying on that hospital bed with your face covered up.”

“What the hell is she talking about?” Spiller asked.

“Nothing,” Nick said. “She had a bad dream last night.”

Janis leaned forward and gripped Nick’s right shoulder urgently. “It might not have been just a dream, Nicky. It might have been a vision of some kind, a warning of some kind….”

“Knock it off, honey,” Nick said. “It was just a dream.”

Janis sat back quickly and opened the book by Dr. Strick. “Nicky, in this book about the people who have jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge, it says that one of the survivors suffered a ruptured spleen. So there must be something to the dream. I mean, look, I never even heard of the spleen before. I didn’t even know the human body had anything in it called the spleen.
